The raw food revolution has
been around a lot longer than you might think, maybe forever, as some raw
foodists like to point out, since mankind was out roaming the earth in search of sustenance way before
the microwave oven existed. A rapacious opportunivore myself, I admit I cultivate a
certain skepticism toward the array of exotically-packaged esoterica on the
“Raw Foods” shelf at my local health food store. Products that seem to lose
sight of the fact that raw food is just food — and... Read more...
Remember that old medical line about taking two aspirins and calling the doc in the morning?
Well, it seems that taking two aspirins could lead to far more trips to the doctor's office than previously thought.
Aspirin — along with other over-the-counter drugs, including Tylenol, ibuprofin, and others — may not be the (nearly) harmless talismans that many of us believe.
Nowadays, before reaching for an aspirin or Tylenol to take care
of a raging headache or an injured muscle, I... Read more...
A new study released in October suggests that maternal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) could eliminate or decrease the sex difference in certain behavioral responses. The study adds to a growing evidence to suggest that exposure to BPA affects behaviors or the brain among others.
Constantly racing to meet deadlines — getting things finished within a timeline come hell or high water — is a relatively new phenomenon in human history. When the Egyptians built pyramids, they expected the process to take decades. In setting sail for the new world, Columbus knew it would take considerably longer than the few hours now required to travel from Europe to North America. And when Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí was commissioned in 1883 to complete La Sagrada... Read more...

It’s a hot, sunny day in Los Angeles, but
I’m sitting in air conditioning-crazy Starbucks, freezing my frijoles
off and looking for answers. Since my life coach hasn’t shown up yet, I
look elsewhere — to the LA Times astrology pages.
Pisces: You may think you know why someone does what he does, but you
can’t be sure. Therefore, stay within your own boundaries and concern
yourself with your own interests.
Ah, my own interests —
this is what I spoke... Read more...

power to capture the imagination and draw the captivated from their
beds to scour the nearest woods in the cold, creaky hours before dawn.
It’s this allure that brings Todd Spanier and me to Golden Gate Park
one morning in late September. A promising fog drips from the treetops
as I follow Spanier through the pine and... Read more...

It’s heee-eere: November. If
you’re anxiously anticipating cold dark days, nasty bugs, dry skin and
the packing on of the dreaded holiday pounds, take heart (and a
spoonful of cod liver oil). We brought together seven holistic
practitioners to pick their brains on everything from fighting the flu
to battling the winter blues. So this season, when the guy in the
adjacent cubical sneezes, instead of cringing, rest assured… and hand
him this article.
To Flu... Read more...

With the holidays around the corner,
earth-wise hosts and hostesses with the mostest are in party-planning
mode. But when it comes to picking the most sustainable wines, the
choice isn’t as straightforward as most harried hosts would like. The
old rule of thumb — look for products labeled “organic” — doesn’t work
on the wine shelf. Federal regulators only allow that label for foods
free of synthetic additives. Many winemakers, however, still add
sulfites to their... Read more...
When you see somebody you hate, whether it's an evil ex or a mean colleague, your brain undergoes a rather unexpected transformation. A new study published in PLoS One today reveals that hatred isn't the blind, irrational emotion it might seem. In fact, hate activates the brain regions associated with higher reason and the ability to predict what other people will do.
